Blackmail
This innovative film, which is generally acknowledged as Britain's first full-length talking picture and
Hitchcock's first use of sound, stars Anny Ondra as Alice White, the daughter of a London shopkeeper.
Although her boyfriend, Frank Webber (John Longden), is a Scotland Yard detective, the demanding Alice finds
him dull. When Frank is late for their date at a restaurant, Alice attempts to ignite a spark in the detective by
flirting with a handsome artist (Cryil Ritchard). The plan backfires and after an argument with Frank, the naive
girl leaves with the other man. Enticed into visiting his studio, Alice is forced to defend herself from the man's
unwanted advances, and stabs him to death with a nearby knife. She flees the scene, unwittingly leaving
evidence behind. Frank is assigned to the case and does his best to protect Alice from being identified as the
murderer, but a shady witness to the crime begins to blackmail the haunted girl.

believe the young attress Diana Baring (Norah Baring) is responsible for killing another woman in her acting
troupe, he votes guilty alone with his fellow jurors. Sir John is haunted by his decision and so becomes an
amateur sleuth in order to find the real murderer. As the truth is uncoverd, the gumshoe actor sets out to trap
the culprit!

Adapted from Somerset Maugham's "Ashenden" adventure stories and a play written by Campbell Dixon, this
gripping drama stars Sir John Gielgud as Edgar Brodie, a novelist and former military hero who is reluctantly
turned into an undercover operative named Richard Ashenden. He's assigned to hunt down and dispose of an
enemy spy in Geneva, Switzerland, but an innocent tourist is killed by mistake. Though Ashenden is filled with
remorse, he and his partners, Elsa Carrington (Madeleine Carroll) and the 'General' (Peter Lorre), continue the
chase to a Swiss chocolate factory where their foes are headquartered. The death toll mounts as the trio
search for clues and close in on their target.
